Tattoo Removal Can Get Under Your Skin

They're the easiest things in the world to add. Getting rid of them is another matter. Tattoos, once the province of sailors and biker gangs, have long since become mainstream. And everyone from teens to grandmothers now sports them. But unlike other fashion statements, you can't just take them off and try on something new when you get tired of them.

It used to be that a "tat" was a lifetime commitment that faded only with age. But now many are contemplating getting rid of their old adornments, either through the desire for change or the realization that they made a mistake when they were young.

There are several ways to erase them, but the most effective is unfortunately also the most painful. Andrew Andrade found that out the hard way when he went to get his tattoo removed using a laser. "I'm in college and I'm studying human resources, so when I go shake somebody's hand, they won't judge me right away on the outside," he explains.  He was 16 when he and a friend made the decision to get the markings. Five years later, he fears he made an error.

It's something Dr. Stephen Mulholland of SpaMedica hears all the time. In fact, studies show 50-75 per cent of people with tattoos come to regret getting them in later years. Which means you should likely think before you ink. The treatments can be uncomfortable, and have been compared to 10 times the sensation of an elastic band snapping on your skin.
